July 2008 Newsletter
(July 31, 2008)
Dear MPSO Family and Friends,
Wow! It
has been an eventful three weeks since I was crowned Miss
Pennsylvania 2008. I am eager to fill you in on all the exciting
details.
My journey began early on Sunday morning, July 13th, with the annual
Miss Pennsylvania Awards Breakfast where I was joined by all twenty five
contestants, local and state committee members, volunteers, family, and
friends. We all enjoyed a delicious breakfast, and I was honored to be
presented with the keys to the official “Miss PA mobile”. I was also presented
with a gorgeous fur coat provided by Pennsylvania Fur Trappers Association.
Later that evening, I said goodbye to my mom, and moved my pageant week
suitcases into the Miss PA host home. I also completed my first two newspaper
interviews via telephone.
Monday morning, I was off to interview with reporter Jaciel Cordoba at WFMZ
Channel 69 in Allentown. Jaciel was a wonderful host, and he had really done his
homework! (Jaciel was in the audience during the final night of Miss PA
competition).
On the way home, my traveling companion and I decided to stop by the Red Cross
where I personally thanked them for the cots they provided to contestants during
competition week. Any contestant would tell you that we really did use those
cots to steal a nap whenever time permitted. My pageant week experience surely
wouldn’t have been the same without them. Thanks again, Red Cross!
Tuesday, MPSO President “Bucky” Szulborski gave me the grand tour of Bethlehem,
visiting: Hotel Bethlehem (hi Natalie!), Tortillia Flats (hi Ben!), Twisted
Tulip, TC Salon and Spa, Lehigh University, Moravian Book Shop, Sun Inn, and the
Ballet Guild. To top off the afternoon, I had a delicious lunch courtesy of Mama
Nino’s.
The next several days were filled with more visits to our wonderful sponsors
across the Lehigh Valley. I got a taste of breakfast at Billy’s Downtown Diner,
and I visited town halls in Easton and Bethlehem. I took the Miss PA mobile in
for a check up at ABE Car Care, and started working out at LA Fitness in
Allentown.
On July 18th, I had the privilege of doing a radio interview with
longtime radio host, Dan Holzman of Clear Channel Communications, and making
Pizza with Joe at Papa Doro’s pizza, another beloved MPSO sponsor. (It was fun,
although my pizza was inedible…Thanks Joe, for letting me into your kitchen!)
Okay, take a deep breath, because that was just week one!
Over the course of the next week, I had my first official meeting with Business
Manger, Mary Lausch and her assistant Tara Martenis at the lovely Hotel Hershey.
I moved out of my apartment in Pittsburgh, and had one final meeting with my
piano Professor from Carnegie Mellon, Donna Amato.
I’ve connected with the directors of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts in
Harrisburg, and we are all excited about partnering for upcoming opportunities
to promote my platform – Stay posted for details as they develop!
Special Hello to Kate Kline and her newly crowned Schuylkill County Fair
titleholders. I had a great time at the fair where I spoke about the importance
of county and community fairs. I also had the great honor and challenge of
judging the Royalty Contest. (Believe me, it was a stiff competition. All the
young ladies really exemplified the spirit of Schuylkill County.)
Special thanks to Valerie Clemens for inviting me to join 7 other titleholders
at the “Miss Maine Invitational” on July 25th. A very special thank
you also goes out to Bloomingdales of King of Prussia Mall for outfitting me for
this special occasion.
I had a blast in Atlantic City with fellow titleholders: Miss Connecticut, Miss
District of Columbia, Miss Maine, Miss New Hampshire, Miss New Jersey, Miss
Rhode Island, and Miss Virgin Islands. They are all amazing ladies and I can’t
wait to reconnect with them in Orlando!
Speaking of Orlando… I want to wish Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Teen, Julia Rae
Schlucter, the very best as she heads off to compete for the title of Miss
America’s Outstanding Teen. Julia, I will be there cheering for you in Orlando.
You are an outstanding young woman and I know that you will make our
Commonwealth proud!
To finish off July, I am headed to the Musikfest Sponsor’s Reception in
Bethlehem tonight. I am excited to experience Musikfest as it has attained close
to legendary status here in the Lehigh Valley…
With Warmest Regards,
Your Miss Pennsylania 2008,
Kendria Ashley Perry
