Miss Pennsylvania Newsletters

August 2008 Newsletter
(September 5, 2008)

Dear MPSO Friends and Family,

August was another very busy month. It began with a visit to the Pennsylvania Trappers’ Annual meeting in Lebanon. I was happy to have the opportunity to offer my thanks in person for the beautiful fur coat they provide for Miss Pennsylvania each year. I learned a lot about trapping, and about the rich history and traditions of the Pennsylvania Trappers. At the end of the evening, I was presented with my very own trap. (I’ve been carrying it around in the trunk of the Miss Pennsylvania- Mobile just in case J )

This month, I also experienced the Lehigh Valley phenomenon that is “Musikfest”. During this ten-day musical extravaganza, performers pack venues across downtown Bethlehem, and vendors serve cuisine from all over the world. (Translation: You can hear and smell Musikfest for miles around!) I appeared at Musikfest several times during the festival. Some of the highlights included a live television interview with Ed Wilson, and Grammy winner Jimmy Sturr singing the Pennsylvania Polka to me – what an honor!

I was a guest on Comcast Newsmakers with host Janelle Wolfe on August 6th, and I modeled fashions by J.Klienbauer of Selinsgrove at a Multiple Sclerosis Society Polo event on August 8th

On August 12th, I was off to Orlando for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant where our very own Miss Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Teen was first runner up! I am so proud of her and I wish everyone in our state could’ve had the chance to see her shine.

Upon my return home, I was honored to have the Pennsylvania Academy of Music open its doors to me for a grand tour, and the invitation to practice on their nine-foot Steinway in preparation for the Miss America pageant. Thank you!

On August 22nd, I spoke and performed at “Fun Fit and Fabulous” in Hershey. Presented by Highmark Blue Shield, “Fun, Fit and Fabulous” is a one-day teen health conference designed to help teens of color make healthy lifestyle choices. This appearance was made truly special by the companionship of former Miss Pennsylvania Mayra Acasta Hoy, who also spoke and performed at the event. (Ironic side note – The conference was held at the Hershey Lodge where there is chocolate temptation everywhere. I didn’t have any dessert, but I did steal a moment from the fitness conference to take a picture with a lifesize Reese’s Cup!)

On Sunday the 24th, I joined our dedicated MPSO volunteers for a reception at the Sun Inn in Bethlehem. The turn-out was great for this first annual event, and I am so glad that I got a chance to help show our volunteers the appreciation that they deserve.

My big meeting with Pennsylvania Council on the Arts took place in Harrisburg on the 27th, and it was followed by another highly anticipated meeting with administrators at Carnegie Mellon on the 28th. I am happy to report that both meetings had positive outcomes.  I have officially partnered with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to promote my “Art Works!” platform across the state. Many exciting appearances will result from this wonderful partnership including an appearance at the prestigious Governor’s Awards for the Arts this fall.

Finally, this newsletter wouldn’t be complete without a big thank you to the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University for their pledge to match the scholarship that I won as Miss Pennsylvania. Also, we can look forward to seeing a CMU sponsored ad in the Miss America program book in January. Thank You CMU.

That’s all for now, but there is more to follow!

Yours,
Kendria Ashley Perry
